Just sounds like semantics. 20 yrs ago it was empathy not sympathy, now it's back to sympathy...ridiculous. If you can't empathize with a 19th century slave you're not trying hard enough. There's always a vested interest behind evil. Hitler hated the Jews to generate a convenient scapegoat and to justify the appropriation of Jewish property and assets.
